Wisconsin Rapids Assumption captured its first state championship in school history holding off Barneveld 39-35 in a thrilling Division 5 championship game. The Royals started strong, leading 14-7 after the first quarter and they stretched it 13 early in the second half. That's when the Golden Eagles started coming back. Barneveld's only senior, Madie Laube keyed the comeback, scoring all 8 of her points in the second half. Her two free throws with 3:13 to play got the game even at 31. That's when Assumption freshman Gena Grundhoffer took over the game. She scored 6 of the Royals last 8 points including hitting all four pressure packed free throws down the stretch. Grundhoffer finished with a game high 10 points. Barneveld was led by Rachel Slaney with 12. Barneveld finished 27-2 on the year and both losses were to Assumption. The Royals wound up 28-1 and take home a gold ball in their second state tournament appearance.
