GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Green Bay Water Utility has hired a forensic engineering to look into the cause of a three foot water main break back in late December that spewed eight million gallons along East Mason Street. 

To date, paid repairs total $83,000, but that figure is expected to be around $220,000. 

The engineering firm will look into the cause of the pipe break and provide risk assessment for the rest of the pipe and what actions the water utility needs to take to ensure its safety.  The report is due in August.

Water Utility Manager Nancy Quirk says the engineering report could cost as much as $211,000. 

Quirk says the water main was installed in 1974, and was designed to last between 80 and 100 years.
