Colfax nips Prairie School

The best was saved for last on a very successful opening day at the WIAA Girls State Basketball tournament hosted for the first time by the Resch Center.  Colfax defeated the Prairie School 42-42 in the tightest game of the first two sessions.  The Vikings advance to the Division 4 title game against Algoma on Saturday.  The game was tied five times with five lead changes, the last with 1:54 to play on a free throw by Ryleigh Prochnow.  Two more throws built the lead to 3 and Prairie missed a game tying three in the closing seconds but threw in a put back at the horn for the final margin.  Colfax (26-1) was led by Braana Steen with 16 points and 11 rebounds.  The Prairie School (24-3) was led by All State candidate Gabrielle Ortiz with 15 points but the Division 1 recruit struggled from the floor hitting just 6 of 23 shots. Colfax advances to their first title game on their third trip to state. The WIAA released attendance figures for Thursday's Division 5 and 4 semifinals and the 8440 fans far surpassed the 6242 who attended last year at the Kohl Center.
