MADISON (WRN) A coalition of disability rights advocates are speaking out against Governor Walker’s voucher expansion plan. Beth Sweeden with the Wisconsin Board for People with Developmental Disabilities says there are a no “federal protections in place” for disabled students attending private schools. “So they (private schools) can tell families that they offer certain things–teachers, curriculum, specialists–and not deliver on any of that.”
Sweeden says the group is concerned tax dollars would be paying for situations where “families are promised one thing and they get something else.”
WI BPPD, Disability Rights Wisconsin, WI FACETS and Wisconsin Family Ties are applauding recent voucher concerns by state senators in Walker’s own party such as Senate President Mike Ellis. Some parents whose children have special needs are supporting the governor’s voucher expansion.
