Outagamie Co. Executive Tom Nelson considers county Medicaid expansion

APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) - Outagamie County Executive Tom Nelson is exploring the possibility of bypassing the state and directly seeking federal dollars to expand Medicaid.

"As the chief elected official of one our state's largest counties, I have a fiduciary responsibility to the taxpayers to ensure that we receive our fair share of state and federal resources," Nelson said. "At stake is affordable health insurance coverage for an estimated 7,000 Outagamie County citizens. We must explore any and all options to secure federal dollars intended for our citizens."

Nelson says a number of counties in Wisconsin, including Green Lake County, have been working on the idea.

Last month, Governor Scott Walker announced he would reject full Medicaid expansion under the federal health care law. At that time, Governor Walker introduced his alternative plan for Wisconsin.

Some counties in Texas and California are also looking to band together to seek federal funding for expansion of Medicare services.

Nelson is attending the National Association of Counties legislative conference in Washington D.C. this week, and will also meeting with members of Wisconsin's Congressional delegation.
