NBC 26 speaks out about Time Warner Cable contract issue

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) -The Official Packers station in Green Bay is no longer being broadcast on Time Warner Cable after terms of a new contract could not be reached before a midnight Wednesday deadline.

NBC 26 WGBA-TV is owned by Journal Communications, which also owns WTMJ in Milwaukee and numerous other TV stations across the nation whose channels have gone black on Time Warner.

WGBA General Manager Joe Poss says a contract extension was offered on Wednesday.

“Putting contract extensions in there, so it doesn’t spill out to the viewers is very common, and Time Warner decided not to, so that is why we are not on,” Poss said during a phone conversation Thursday.

NBC 26 broadcasts the Packers preseason games that start in a couple weeks.

“We are working hard, I have a conference call every single day to try and resolve this, but we do have to make smart businesses decisions,” Poss said.

Time Warner says Journal is asking for a 200 percent increase in fees.

“If you take a penny and you double it, it’s a 100 percent increase…I think the real number we need to look at is a half a penny a day in a monthly contract for a subscriber of Time Warner,” Poss said.

Poss highlights other alternatives to watch NBC 26, like the traditional TV antenna, Dish Network, DirecTV, or AT&T Uverse.
