GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - The calendar may say July, and you may be sweating in this heat, but officials with the Salvation Army of Brown County are hoping to bring out some Christmas cheer next week.
The Salvation Army is kicking off "Christmas in July" on Monday, July 22. The Red Kettles and bell ringers will be out to help raise money for the need-based community programs.
"This is the first year that the Salvation Army of Brown County is hosting Christmas in July," says county coordinator Captain Ken Shiels. "A number of other Army locations have brought out their Red Kettles during July and we thought it was a good idea given the ongoing need in the community."
During their most recent Red Kettle Christmas campaign, the group raised nearly $1.113 million, falling short of their $1.2 million goal.
"The need is still there in the community, so anything we can raise during our Christmas in July efforts will help us deliver the programs to meet that need," says Shiels. "It's also a great opportunity for people to ring bells while enjoying some nice summer weather."
Festival Foods locations in Green Bay, Suamico and De Pere will host the kettles from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. from July 22 to 28 with the Festival clerks donning the familiar bell-ringing aprons.
There is also a list of area businesses which have agreed to match the donations:
- Associated Bank - July 22
- Schreiber Foods - July 23
- Broadway Automotive - July 24
- Wisconsin Public Service Foundation - July 25
- Cellcom - July 26
- Fox Communities Credit Union - July 27
Duck Creek Golf Center will also help out with the fundraising effort by holding a Driving Range Challenge from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. from July 22 to 28. Participants make a donation of a certain amount and get 3 balls to attempt to land one into the big red kettle 100 yards away. Prizes are given to those who get a hole in one.
Culvers will also host the red kettles at its four Green Bay area locations, while donating 10 percent of all sales from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on July 23 to the campaign.
