DE PERE, WI (WTAQ) - Crews with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation is working on repairs to a De Pere bridge damaged by a truck last September.
DOT officials say the truck was too tall and struck the underside of the bridge, damaging four girders that support the bridge surface.
Work on the project, which began July 8, will continue through mid-October.
WisDOT says the bridge is structurally sound right now, but time and exposure to the elements could weaken the girders. That’s why the DOT decided now is the time to replace three girders and apply a protective surface coat to the other.
During the repair work, there will be some traffic impacts. They are as follows:
- Night closures of U.S. 41 northbound and Scheuring Road. Traffic will be diverted up and down the ramps of the Scheuring Road interchange.
- Eastbound Scheuring Road reduced to one lane for duration of project.
- Westbound lane of Scheuring Road closed for five consecutive days towards the end of the project.
- Lane closures on US 41 and Scheuring Road.
Insurance is covering the repair, meaning it will not impact taxpayers.
