SAG Awards 2013: 'Downton Abbey' Beats 'Breaking Bad,' 'Mad Men,' for Best TV Drama

By Christian Blauvelt, Hollywood.com Staff

""A SAG Award? What is a SAG Award?"" You can practically hear the showpeople-averse Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham asking that. But once somebody told her, hopefully she'd be happy to have won one, because Downton Abbey just upset Mad Men, Breaking Bad, and Homeland to take home the Best Ensemble in a TV Drama prize. The soapy period drama beat out several other series and reminded people that PBS isn't just for grandparents' and staunch NPR supporters.

The honor recognized the British import for Series 2, which began airing in the U.S. starting January 2012. (Yes, it does feel like forever since we saw Miss Lavinia Swire alive and well.) Phyllis Logan (Mrs. Hughes), Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary), and Sophie McShera (Daisy) were on hand to collect the award at the ceremony, where an exclamation of ""shut the French doors!"" signified the sedated British excitement viewers of the series have come to know and love. Maggie Smith, as is always the case at awards shows, was not in attendance.
