The stage show adaptation, which stars Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway, saw off competition from Django Unchained to take the number one spot this weekend (19-20Jan13).
Quentin Tarantino's Western, which will compete against Les Miserables for the coveted Best Picture trophy at the Academy Awards next month (Feb13), came in second with $4.4 million (£2.8 million).
Another Best Picture contender, Ang Lee's drama Life of Pi, earned $1.9 million (£1.2 million) to take third place, while Naomi Watts' Best Actress-nominated turn in tsunami movie The Impossible is close behind with $1.7 million (£1.1 million).
Gangster Squad, starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, rounds out the top five with takings of $1.2 million (£791,799).
