Mine permitting process could take years with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

WASHINGTON D.C. (WTAQ) - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says its approval process for mining operations could take two to four years.

Republican lawmakers introduced legislation this week streamlining state mining requirements, saying the changes could lead to the creation of thousands of jobs.

Democratic opponents point to the timeline released by the corps to bolster their argument that it would be years before any jobs are created by Wisconsin mining operations.

The sponsor of the Republican bill is state Senator Tim Cullen of Janesville.

Cullen says he doesn’t think the corps’ review process would mean major delays in getting mine operations started and bringing new jobs to areas where they are needed.

A hearing will be held next Wednesday morning at the state Capitol on the legislation.
