Democrats say Corps of Engineers process for mining permits "could take years"

MADISON, WI (WSAU) -  U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officials say the mining approval process could take many years. That’s not what mining supporters want to hear, as they try to generate jobs in the northern part of Wisconsin.

Democratic State Senator Tim Cullen released documents Friday showing how the application process through the Corps of Engineers can take between two and four years. Republican Senator Tom Tiffany is the key author of the new mining legislation. He says mining applicants will have to notify the Corps of Engineers as soon as they apply for state permits.

Tiffany doesn’t believe the Corps process would lead to major delays. Many Democrats remain opposed to mining, and say it would take years before any jobs are created.
