It's getting harder and harder to be a Community fan. And it's not like being a Lakers fan, witnessing a team's former glory fly away on winds of change - Community has never been a top player. We honorary Greendale Human Beings have suffered through the uncertainty of every new season, the soul-crushing move to the wasteland of Friday night timeslots, the scandal between the outspoken former showrunner and the cantankerous cast member Chevy Chase, the subsequent removal of said showrunner, and the untimely departure of Chase as well. It's been rough. And that's why the departure of key writer and one of the more integral voices of the series is so distressing. It feels like the beginning of the end.
Megan Ganz announced her new position as a writer on the ABC juggernaut Modern Family via Reddit, meaning her time on the beloved cult sitcom has come to an end. In a heartfelt post, Ganz recounts the experience of writing her first episode of Community, Season 2's "Cooperative Calligraphy" (a.k.a. the bottle episode). "For the last three years, the sum total of my contribution to this planet (in terms of effort, passion, and things I let myself go soft and pimply for) could be described as follows: Community," writes Ganz. But she adds something rather ominous for fans: "although it's unclear what will happen with Community for the fifth season (or the sixth season, or the movie), I've decided to take this new position."
When the Season 4 premiere was pushed from the already late release in October back to February, fans began to worry. And the worry only grew when Chase left the show in November, with two episodes left to be filmed. Ganz's departure can only serve to worry the overly-committed bunch even further. However, it's too early to call the fate of the show. NBC was unavailable for comment on the team's big change at the time of publication.
But no matter what the fate of Greendale is, like Ganz, Community will continue to occupy a special place in our hearts, long after what could be its final season premiere on Feb. 7. She writes:This isn't the end of me and Greendale. Community was my world for four seasons and my job for three, and has hold of my whole heart like a bad-news high school boyfriend. I'll never really get away. The chemistry is too perfect and the writing room couches aren't really that uncomfortable to sleep on and I just can't stop writing for Britta. Plus I still have to do my editing pass on the finale. I think I left a box in my office, too. Bobrow probably misses me. Better stop by on my way home.(Greendale) Times, they are a-changin' and we certainly can't stop them any more than we can stop Jeff Winger from texting or Abed from reciting movie lines ad nauseum.
