Pulaski school board considers $11M April referendum after Nov. defeat

PULASKI, WI (WTAQ) - The Pulaski School District is looking at going round two in the referendum ring.

In November, the district posed a $33 million question to voters for building maintenance, technology upgrades, and new amenities that included a community pool and center, along with security upgrades and a sports complex addition.

But voters rejected the single referendum by a two to one margin.

Now the school board is considering a smaller referendum for $10.9 million that focuses mainly on much needed building maintenance and improving the technology infrastructure.

District residents sounded off Wednesday night in a public input session regarding the new break down of priorities.  A group of around 50 people showed up and those who expressed their opinion all felt the district should have focused the November question on needs not wants.

In addition, many liked the new proposal for nearly $11 million.

Many questioned why the district didn’t pose separate questions for building maintenance, technology, and new amenities separately and then let the chips fall where they may.

Superintendent Mel Lightner says the school board must decide 70 days ahead of time if they want a referendum question on the April ballot.  They have until mid-January to decide.
