Sturgeon-spearing numbers mixed

UNDATED (WSAU)   Spearers took almost 275 sturgeon on the opening weekend of their season on Lake Winnebago and its connected lakes up the Fox River. Only 81 of those fish were taken on the state’s largest inland lake. And spearers had more success yesterday than on Saturday, despite the rain-and-snow which hit the region. For the first time in two years, spearers are close to their harvest limits on the upriver lakes.

The state D-N-R’s Ryan Koenigs says the season will close early in that region, if 13 more adult females are taken for a total quota of 83. He says it’s likely that the spearing on Lake Winnebago will continue for all of the scheduled 16 days – the third year in a row it will have happened. Koenigs says the water clarity has been poor for spearers.

A 118-pound sturgeon was registered at Quinney yesterday. It was 77-and-a-half inches long. Officials say a number of 200-pounders are there for the taking – and Koenigs says he hopes water clarity and weather conditions improve as the season moves on.
