MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) -- The 2013 wolf hunt will be closing tonight.
The Department of Natural Resources is reporting that Wolf Zone 3 is nearing its harvest quota. 64 of 71 wolves have been harvested, and the DNR will be closing the zone this afternoon at 5 pm.
DNR wolf hunt coordinator David MacFarland said back in November that a number of hunters were changing tactic in the hunt this year. "It seems if people have shifted to going out earlier in the season, so a combination of earlier hunting and increased trapping have led to the increased wolf harvest."
DNR Land Division Administrator Kurt Thiede says the harvest picked up this weekend. "After a slow beginning to the season in Zone 3, hunting and trailing conditions were favorable to higher hunter success. Therefore, with 12 wolves harvested in the last two days, we felt it was important to close the season at this point given the renewed pace of harvest and hunter success."
The DNR says any wolves not yet registered need to be registered immediately. Call the DNR at 1-855-299-9653 to register your wolf.
