State officials improving sex offender tracking and monitoring

MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) -- The Wisconsin Department of Corrections is working to improve the tracking and monitoring of sex offenders on release.

DoC public affairs director Joy Staab says they're keeping a close watch on on all offenders, not just the serious cases. "We do have a process where we do continue to check in with these individuals as they're released, we continue to monitor them, and we continue to provide treatment to them in order to help them have a smooth transition back into society.

At issue is the fact that the state is obligated to monitor all registrants, but not all offenders are considered likely to reoffend. Staab says not every case warrants a full media release or high profile warnings. "You have to remember that every case is different, they are all assessed case by case, but at the minimum they'll have to check in with their probation officer once a week, in addition to electronic monitoring."

The changes are coming after an audit earlier this year showed that the state was in need of both better tracking of offenders on release, and finding affordable housing for offenders.
