FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ) - Police in Fond du Lac are releasing more details about the weaponry found inside the apartment of a man who caused a five-hour standoff Monday.

It all began with a house fire at 65 North Hickory Street around 9 a.m. Police say they determined the fire was suspicious and immediately identified a person of interest while on scene.

A search began for the man in the area near where he lived, 871 South Main Street. As cops responded, they reported that someone was shooting at them. Then more officers arrived on scene and set up a perimeter in an attempt to isolate the gunman and protect people living and working in the area.

Police brought in an armored vehicle to provide protection. Meanwhile, crisis negotiators contacted the man by phone.

Authorities determined the man had “a significant number” of guns, ammunition, ballistic shields and vests. They also learned he may have had an explosive device. Police requested help from officers in surrounding communities and told people in the area to stay indoors. SWAT teams used armored vehicles to rescue people who were trapped in the same apartment building as the shooter.

The man gave himself up around 2 p.m. He was initially jailed on a possible charge of resisting arrest, but police say more charges are expected to be filed.

Officers got a warrant to search the man’s apartment. They found assault rifles, a .50 caliber rifle, ammunition, tactical vests and empty shell casings. They did not find any explosives, but did find an inert device.

Police released photos of the guns that were taken.

At least two homes were hit by gunfire and at least 26 rounds were fired, including two from the .50 caliber rifle, police say. At least one police officer was shot at as he approached the apartment.

Police have not identified the man.
