KALISPELL, Mont. (WSAU) - A six-foot tall statue of Jesus standing on U.S. Forest Service property can stay for now, but the Freedom from Religion Foundation still wants it gone.
The Wisconsin-based atheist group has filed an appeal of a federal judge’s ruling saying the statute can stay. The statue just received a ten year permit for the Knights of Columbus allowing the statue to remain as part of a World War II memorial on Big Mountain. The Freedom From Religion Foundation says the permit doesn’t matter, as this is a violation of Constitutional separation of church and state.
The FFRF filed their appeal to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Aug. 22.
