Wisconsin might be next to outlaw employers from employee social media sites

MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) - It might soon be illegal for Wisconsin employers to ask employees and applicants for social media passwords.

A Senate committee will discuss that bill Tuesday. The bill, if passed, would protect people’s Facebook, Twitter, and other personal accounts from being accessed by the employer.

An Assembly committee already passed the bill, and it’s likely the full Legislature could take action as early as September.

Right now, fourteen other states have a similar law prohibiting the request of usernames and passwords to access an employee or applicant’s social media accounts.
