MILWAUKEE (WTAQ) - A Milwaukee Democrat plans to introduce a bill next week to give his city a half-million dollars in state funds to help deal with a rash of shootings.
It would honor Mayor Tom Barrett’s request for matching funds, after he gave Milwaukee Police a half-million dollars in city funds last week for more overtime.
State Representative Jon Richards says the city has done its part to pay for more policing, and he wants the state to meet Milwaukee halfway.
Governor Scott Walker opposes the extra state funding, saying it would lead to other Wisconsin mayors lining up for more cash.
GOP Assembly Speaker Robin Vos has said he would consider Barrett’s request, but he wants Milwaukee Police to improve its crime fighting efforts – which police officials say has already been done.
