DNR wants help destroying Gypsy Moth eggs

MADISON, WI. (WSAU) -  Forestry experts say now is the time to seek out and properly destroy gypsy moth eggs.

Department of Natural Resources forestry health officials say the pests will start hatching over the next few weeks. They want property owners to search their trees, houses, firewood piles, swings, playground equipment and any other outdoor surface for the tan colored egg masses that are about the size of a quarter.

The eggs can be sprayed with horticultural oil like Golden Pest Spray Oil, or the egg masses can be carefully scraped into a container and drowned in soapy water.

DNR officials say it’s important not to scrape the masses onto the ground and step on them or break them apart. They say doing that allows too many eggs will survive.
