Oshkosh police warn of card-skimming devices on ATMs

OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ) - Police in Oshkosh are warning about a scam involving card-skimming devices on ATMs.

Three people reported unauthorized transactions on their financial accounts on Wednesday to police. Officers say the victims had used an ATM machine in the 1600 block of West 20th Avenue last weekend.

Officers believe a skimming device had been placed on the ATM's card slot. The devices, which are designed to appear to be part of the machine, read the magnetic strips of cards that are used in the machine. The person who placed the device on the machine then returns to take it off, and has access to the accounts associated with cards used at the machine.

Police say if the ATM you are using appears to have an added part to the card reader, do not put your card in. Instead, report it to police or the financial institution as soon as possible.

Anyone with information about this week's incident is asked to call Oshkosh police at (920) 236-5700. Anonymous tips can also be left with Crime Stoppers by calling (920) 231-8477, text-messaging IGOTYA and the tip to 274637, or online at winnebagocrimestoppers.org.
