ST. CROIX COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) - Aaron Schaffhausen will find out as early as Tuesday whether he’ll go to prison, or to a mental institution for killing his three young daughters last July in River Falls.

The prosecution rested its case Monday in Schaffhausen’s sanity trial, ending two weeks of testimony.

Attorneys will make their closing arguments Tuesday. And then the case will go to a St. Croix County jury.

Ten of the 12 final jurors must agree on a fate for the 35-year-old Schaffhausen, who pleaded guilty to his homicide and attempted arson charges before his sanity trial.

Monday, the prosecution’s final witness – state mental health doctor Erik Knudson – testified that Schaffhausen knew right from wrong when he stabbed and slashed his daughters Cecilia, Sophie, and Amara.

If the jury agrees, the 35-year-old Schaffhausen will get three mandatory life prison terms, plus a sentence for the attempted arson. If he’s found insane, he’ll go to a mental institution where he can get treatment and eventually petition for a release.
