MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Instead of giving vouchers to more kids to attend private schools, two GOP lawmakers are floating an alternative that would give a tax break to all parents of youngsters in private schools.
Senate Republican Glenn Grothman of West Bend and Assembly Republican Dean Kaufert of Neenah are proposing the income tax break.
Kaufert says it could be a viable alternative to a large expansion of private school choice – which a majority of Republican senators say they’re against.
Governor Scott Walker has proposed giving kids private school vouchers in up to nine additional school districts which have underperforming public schools.
Walker’s office has not commented on the tax credit idea. It’s been brought up before – but it’s been shot down because it would cost well over $100 million.
School choice supporters say they’re okay with the idea, as long as it’s an addition to expanded vouchers – not a replacement.
