NEW LONDON, WI (WTAQ) - Police in New London say a 19-year-old man is behind bars after he fled following a routine traffic stop.
Authorities say it happened on Mill Street at East Beckert Road around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday.
During the stop, officers believed they smelled marijuana smoke in the vehicle.
When they asked the driver and passenger to exit the vehicle, the passenger immediately began to run.
One of the cops chased him, while the other officer stayed with the driver.
During the chase, the officer noticed the suspect reach for his waist band area. It was then the officer tried to subdue the man with a Taser. Because the man was wearing several layers of clothing that didn’t work.
As the chase continued, police say the suspect threw illegal drugs from his pockets.
The officer was finally able to catch the man and take him to the ground. At that time, the suspect allegedly began choking the officer and tried to remove the officer’s weapon from his holster.
Police say the officer was able to secure his weapon while being choked and then hit the suspect with two blows to the head.
After that, police say the suspect was handcuffed and checked for injuries. The suspect didn’t request any medical attention and was transported to the New London Police Department.
Police say after giving several false names, the man was identified as Mario Silva of Hortonville.
Silva was then transported and booked into the Outagamie County Jail for multiple offenses including battery of an officer and possession of marijuana.
At this time no charges have been filed against Silva.
