MILWAUKEE, WI (WTAQ) - The Milwaukee Fire and Police Commission is criticizing police for their response to the fatal shooting of a 13 year old boy in May.
The commission says actions by Milwaukee police created suspicions of racial insensitivity and damaged the community’s trust in the department.
Darius Simmons was shot to death by 76 year old next-door neighbor John Spooner. The teenaged Simmons was black and Spooner is white. Spooner had accused him of stealing guns from his house and he now faces first-degree intentional homicide charges.
The criticisms stem from the way responding police treated members of Simmons’ family after the shooting.
