Suspect arrested for abusing dead cat found in Manitowoc River

MANTIOWOC, WI (WTAQ) - The owner of the dead cat found floating in a garbage bag along the Manitowoc River on Sunday has been arrested for animal cruelty.

Tips from residents lead Manitowoc Police to 49-year-old Michael Wasurick.

Detective Mike Stone says the man owned the cat for nearly a decade.

Wasurick says he was having suicidal thoughts and took it out on the cat, instead of himself. He admitted to hog-tying the cat’s feet and head with duct tape and tossing the cat into a bag and then the river.

Stone says the cat likely died from suffocation.

Wasurick is in jail and police are recommending a charge of felony mistreatment of an animal.

Police also say Wasurick complained about vandalism to his truck late last month, and later admitted to doing the damage himself out of frustration over a relationship he was in.
