Soldier paid leave issue addressed by Wis. Congress members

WASHINGTON, D.C.  (WSAU)  -  Hundreds of soldiers were not properly compensated for leave time.  Members of Wisconsin's Congressional delegation are taking steps to fix the problem.

The Fair Military Leave Act was part of the Senate Defense Authorization Bill. Senator Herb Kohl’s amendment to the act was unanimously approved by his colleagues. Kohl says the Army corrected soldier records, but tried to say soldiers couldn’t use their available paid leave until after a future deployment. He says the Army’s solution means nothing to soldiers who will not be deployed again or are no longer in the service. Wisconsin National Guard’s 1157th Transportation Company had many soldiers short-changed by the Army’s paid leave policy. This amendment ensures the soldiers get paid. Kohl says this won’t affect the deficit, since it’s already funded.

A companion bill has been offered in the House of Representatives by Republican Tom Petri and Democrat Ron Kind of Wisconsin.
