SUPERIOR, WI (WTAQ) - A deer hunter killed near Superior was identified this afternoon as 27-year-old Garrett Carr of Oliver.
Douglas County sheriff’s deputies said his 31-year-old hunting companion mistook Carr for a deer late yesterday – even though the victim was wearing the required blaze orange at the time.
The state DNR continues to investigate the incident, along with the Douglas County sheriff’s and medical examiner’s offices.
Meanwhile, Iowa County authorities said today that a 58-year-old Waunakee man died from an apparent heart attack while hunting yesterday.
Officials said Fred Laufenberg was walking with his soon in a field when he collapsed.
An autopsy was being performed today.
At least five hunters have died during the gun season which began last Saturday, and runs through Sunday.
Two of those hunters – including the victim from Superior – were shot to death.
