This is how it's supposed to work. Ryan Braun is the hitting star, ace Yovani Gallardo delivers on the mound and John Axford finishes the deal. The Milwaukee Brewers completed a three game sweep of the Cubs with a 3-2 victory at Miller Park Wednesday afternoon. Gallardo gave up a lead-off home run to David DeJesus but settled in nicely, keeping Chicago Cub bats quiet until Brian LaHair homered in the seventh. Yovanni allowed just two other hits while striking out 9 to win his 5th consecutive decision and improve to 13-8 on the year. As for Braun, he ripped an RBI double to the right field wall to score Nori Aoki in the first and came home to score on Corey Hart's double. Braun would pad the lead to 3-1 with a solo shot, his 34th of the year in the 6th. John Axford came on to close it out and allowed a hit but struck out the side in the 9th for his 20th save. Milwaukee (57-66) will relax Thursday before spending the weekend in Pittsburgh.
The Brewers released veteran left hander Randy Wolf on Wednesday, on his 36th birthday no less. To make room for Shaun Marcum coming off the disabled list, Marcum was the odd man out. He struggled most of the season with a 3-10 record and 5.69 ERA although there were a few starts when he left with a lead and the bullpen let him down.
