McCarthy: Desmond Bishop's availability will be known after surgery

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Packers coach Mike McCarthy says the team will have a better idea about Desmond Bishop’s availability this season after he has surgery.

That surgery hasn’t been scheduled yet, but McCarthy says it will be done after the swelling goes down.

Bishop suffered a severely torn hamstring in the pre-season opener in San Diego last Thursday. He was one of the few bright spots on a Packer defense which was soft last season.

Despite missing three games, Bishop led his team with 142 tackles and came up with 5 sacks. He also forced two fumbles.

Bishop’s main backup at linebacker is D.J. Smith, who was productive last season in a reserve role, but isn’t expected to match Bishop’s contribution.
