COVERT, MI (WHTC) - Federal regulators claims "significant" safety issues led to shutdowns at the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant south of the Lakeshore in August and September. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says in a preliminary report that an equipment failure damaged a water pump, while an electrician dropped a bar, causing a short that affected several critical systems. Officials contend that the plant did not follow proper safety procedures. The operators of the facility will have a month to respond before a final report is issued.
