MADISON, Wis. (WTAQ) - Wisconsin made less cheese in July than it did a year ago, while California had a nearly 13 percent increase in its output.
The Badger State is the nation’s top cheese maker. But its July production was 0.6 percent less than the previous year, totaling almost 222 million pounds.
Second place California made 188 million pounds. And that helped the nation’s overall cheese production grow by 4.7 percent to 882 million pounds. 3rd place Idaho had a 6 percent increase. New Mexico, which is 4th, had a nearly 20 percent jump in its cheese output.
Wisconsin had increases in its American and Cheddar production. But it made 0.7 percent less Italian cheese, totaling 104 million pounds.
