(Holland, MI - WHTC News) - While one lithium-ion battery-making plant in Holland continues on schedule for the start of production by next year, another is about ready to be built.
In a special meeting last night, City Council members formally approved an agreement with Compact Power that would transfer a dozen acres of land near 48th Street and Waverly Road acquired by the city and annexed from Fillmore Township to the subsidiary of LG/Chem. It was apparently the last hurdle that needed clearance before the Korean auto parts maker can start breaking ground on a 303 million-dollar, 650 thousand square-foot factory at the site on Monday.
LG/Chem hopes to start producing the power source for GM’s hybrid vehicles and other customers at the plant by early 2012. Meanwhile, JCI/Saft’s revamping of the Meadowbrook plant to build lithium-ion batteries for Ford and other clients is apparently on schedule towards a start-up date of next summer.
