Presbyterian College defensive back Justin Bethel is hoping to hear his name called at some point over the three-day NFL draft process, beginning tomorrow night at Radio City Music Hall. If I might take this opportunity to remind folks that we will begin covering Round 1 at 7pm tomorrow and will break in every time the Packers are on the clock on Friday and Saturday. Okay, shameless station promotion…check…back to Bethel.
Scouting reports on Bethel project him as a late-round prospect with good athleticism and burst, strong tackling ability, and a solid head, but concerns over the level of competition he faced while compiling his football resume.
Regardless of whether bethel is selected or not, he’s become a bit of a household name for this YouTube video:
All right…very impressive, but I do have a couple of issues:
#1: This dude was about to perform a freakish act of physical merit, and the best you thought to provide by way of documentation was some guy’s Samsung camera phone? C’mon, Presbyterian College. You had to know this was coming. It’s clearly a premeditated act. There’s an audience, for crying out loud! And no one thought to upgrade to a flip-cam or to contact somebody over at media services to film this circus? That makes me sad.
#2: Bethel is clearly skilled in the ways of vertical elevation, but this dude does not have a 60” vertical. He was able to land 60” above the ground, a feat not easily achieved I'll grant you, but his center of gravity did not clear 60”. It’s giving the dude about 20 bonus inches to say he has a 60” vertical. Now, that being said, a 40” vertical is still impressive as all H-E-double-hockey sticks.
I hope he is picked by somebody. No matter his skills on the field, he's clearly a solid weight room contributor. Do it again, Justin...do it again!
