The Crew’s final spring tune-up in advance of the regular season opener on Friday is this afternoon at Chase Field. Last night, Brewers manager Ron Roenicke announced the squad’s final player move – reserve first baseman Travis Ishikawa will stay…utility infielder Brooks Conrad is headed to Nashville.
So here’s your 25-man opening day roster, Milwaukee fans:
Pitchers (12): RHP John Axford, RHP Tim Dillard, RHP Marco Estrada, RHP Yovani Gallardo, RHP Zack Greinke, RHP Kameron Loe, RHP Shaun Marcum, LHP Chris Narveson, LHP Manny Parra, RHP Francisco Rodriguez, RHP Jose Veras, LHP Randy Wolf.
Catchers (2): Jonathan Lucroy, George Kottaras.
Infielders (6): 1B Mat Gamel, 2B Rickie Weeks, SS Alex Gonzalez, 3B Aramis Ramirez, UTIL Cesar Izturis, 1B Travis Ishikawa.
Outfielders (5): LF Ryan Braun, CF Nyjer Morgan, RF Corey Hart, OF Carlos Gomez, OF Norichika Aoki.
A couple of immediate observations:
#1 – The Brewers will open 2012 with a single reserve middle infielder in the dugout, Cesar Izturis. That gives me great pause, but Roenicke is an in-the-moment kind of guy, and when it comes to managing a baseball team, I think that’s a good thing. Right now, he likes Ishikawa’s defense and his ability to pinch-hit. I can’t argue with that.
#2 (as a result of #1) – I can’t help but wonder how confident the team really is in Mat Gamel. Perhaps I’m reading too much into the retention of Ishikawa, but it is one of those spring things that makes me go hmm.
#3 (and this is the most obvious) – The team will open with 12 arms. But where is #12’s arm? There has been no report of what the team plans to do with their promising right hander:
