Phantastic Phantoms!

The West De Pere Phantoms made it back to back state championships beating Wisconsin Lutheran 39-24 in the Division 3 title game at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison.  The Phantoms extended their winning streak to 28 games on a pair of undefeated seasons after losing the title game in 2009 to Reedsburg.  Senior quarterback Jay Tollefson rushed for 183 yards and three touchdowns and threw a pair of touchdown passes in the victory.  West De Pere took a 7-0 lead on the game's first posession and after giving up a first quarter field goal to the Vikings, fell behind on the first play of the second quarter when Tollefson's punt was blocked by Shawntrell Garner who scooped up the ball at the five and scored to make it 10-7 Wisconsin Lutheran.  It marked the first time all year the Phantoms trailed in a ball game and the only time West De Pere allowed more than one score to an opponent.  The teams traded touchdowns before West De Pere took control in the final minutes of the first half.  Tollefson threw a five yard touchdown pass to Jordan Forrest and after a short punt, drove 40 yards in :43 with Brandon Carter catching a 13 yard touchdown pass with :34 left in the half to put the Phantoms up 25-17.  Tollefson's third touchdown run came two plays after Brad Ambrosius blocked a Lutheran punt and opened the lead to 32-17.   The Vikings would tally once more but Spencer Turiff put the game away with a 55 yard end around early in the 4th quarter.  Head coach Bill Turnquist wrapped up his 37th year at the school with a second straight title, becomming only the second metro area team to win back to back.  Ashwaubenon did it in 2000 and 2001.  Add Wrightstown's thrilling 28-26 double overtime victory over Somerset in the D-4 final Thursday night and it was a great finish to the prep football season.  On the link below, comments from coach Turnquist on the field after the game, starting, as expected, with praise for his opponent.
