The heat is on at Packers camp as the team wilted in 88 degree temperatures this afternoon. Head coach Mike McCarthy cut practice a little short, not because of the thermometer, but because his linebacking corps has been cut in half by injury. Of the 11 backers on the roster, only 6 were able to practice and the news is not very good for Pro Bowler Clay Matthews. He pulled the same hamstring that wiped out his rookie training camp and McCarthy said after the workout that he'll be sidelined for at least 2 weeks. Matthews missed 20 days of camp last summer but by week 4 against Minnesota, worked his way into the starting lineup and finished team high with 10 sacks. The other linebackers watching today Nick Barnett, Brady Poppinga, Frank Zombo and Alex Joseph.
The other big story of the day was number one pick Brian Bulaga getting snaps at left guard. Not just reps, but he's in the mix to win the starting job. McCarthy said after only a week, Bulaga has earned the opportunity to be considered among the best five lineman and that could now be at the expense of veteran Daryn Colledge. Bulaga took reps at guard with both the second and first teams. He will continue to work as the primary left tackle backup to Chad Clifton. Colledge welcomed the challenge saying the competition should make both he and Bulaga better and may the best man win.
Several other players were withheld from pracice inlcuidng Donald Driver who said he had an MRI on his calf muscle today. He's experienced some soreness and the medical staff just wanted a look see, Driver doesn't believe it's anything serious. Andrew Quarless, Brett Swain, James Starks, Will Blackmon, Ronald Talley and Al Harris did not participate.
Another day, another big catch for Jordy Nelson. The third year pro made a terrific sideline grab this afternoon between two defenders. Nearly every day at practice, inlcuding Saturday night's scrimage, Nelson has come up with a highlight reel catch.
