My 10 Year Old's Cooking Brought Me to Tears!

by Vanessa Ryan

I love to cook, but ever since my car accident in February left me with a level four ankle sprain I've been unable to stay on my feet for more than a few minutes at a time. Thank goodness my children have been pretty good about stepping up and helping me at home.

A couple of weeks ago I had a rough day experiencing more pain than usual, and couldn't wait to get home and in bed with my foot up with ice. My 10 year old was sweet putting my ice pack together and reassuring me she could not only make dinner for her, but for the entire family. Needless to say I wasn't expecting much more than maybe toasted bagels. She blew me away by not only making macaroni and cheese, but the best macaroni and cheese I've ever had.

It may have been the pain meds, but the meal brought me to tears because I was so proud of her!! I have to admit I also felt some pride for myself that I've given her the skills to at least cook dinner so she wouldn't starve if I was somehow incapacitated.

Maybe I will succeed at this parenting thing after all?!?!?

Errrr...no, wait. I just remembered my 14 year old can't even warm up a can of soup. :/ BUT...she can do a mean load of laundry, so at least I've given her the skills to have clean clothes as she survives on cheese sandwiches one day in college. ;)
