Nick’s Tip: Choosy Moms Choose This

by Nick Vitrano

Who doesn’t like peanut butter?  Well, aside from folks with nut allergies, that is.  “Choosy Moms choose Jif,” but it truly does not matter which brand you grab for these handy tips.  Peanut butter is an extremely versatile spread.  Great on bread, awesome in cookies, and underrated when you need help with any of the following:

  • Snapping that maverick mouse.  They love cheese in the cartoons, but mice can’t resist the peanut butter in real life.  Spread it on the trap and listen for that sweet snapping sound.  If you’ve got one (or a family), it won’t take long.
  • Cleansing the air after a pungent preparation.  Meal time can mean stinky time for the residents of your abode.  Fish, especially, tends to linger.  Grab a spoonful of PB and sauté in the pan, or drop a spoonful in your oven pan and slide it back in.  The smell of the PB won’t eliminate the odor of the fish, but it will overpower it, and PB just smells better.
  • Cleaning your leather.  A small amount worked in a circular motion works wonders on your leather.  Just buff it out with a dry cloth after application and there you go.  Of course, if you don’t like the smell of PB, well…don’t use it.  It will leave behind a slight PB scent.
  • Getting your pet to take his medicine.  Pet owners already are well versed in this one, but PB is a great delivery vessel for those pet meds.
  • Removing gum from the hair.  What kid doesn’t get gum stuck in the hair at some point?  My sister was a gum magnet as a kid.  This was a lifesaver in our house.  Massage in some PB and the gum should wipe right out – with a little work, of course…but it’s better than cutting it out.  By the way, this also works for clothing and carpets.
  • Removing sticker goo.  See above.  PB is awesome for taking off that sticker residue.
  • Shaving.  Yeah, a thin layer - very thin -  of PB is a great shaving cream!  It tends to gum up the razor, so make sure your rinse water is super hot, especially if you’re using a super quad-blade type of deal.  Oh, and don’t use chunky.  The oils from the PB are great for your skin, and PB is a natural lubricant (which also makes it a decent “fix” for other lubricating needs, like lawnmower blades and nuts and bolts type stuff).
